Vancouver Eye Clinic

The Clinic is the main activity of the Western Region of the Canadian Association. Usually it is held twice a year and is led by our member, Dr. David Neima, a well-known local ophthalmologist.  Students from Douglas College also volunteered.  The medical team and volunteers care for patients with many eye diseases from acute glaucoma and diabetes to cataracts. Most of the patients need glasses, we have also assisted people who are legally blind. Serious problems are given appropriate follow up appointments including people who need to be taken to emergency for immediate care to prevent total blindness.

“The Door is Open”

This is a drop-in centre for adults in the Downtown Eastside. As one of 26 soup kitchens in that area, it offers companionship, recreational activities, meals, tea, and snacks.  It serves at least 250 people every day and once a week – breakfast. The Association has provided the “Door is Open” with non-perishable food and clothing and has organized a monthly food collection at St. Peter and St. Paul, as well as seasonal clothing and socks.

Transportation for handicapped pilgrims to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Mission, BC

The Association also runs a first aid tent which has proven very useful.  Our members with medical training were fortunately able to deal with emergency situations.  Many of the pilgrims too frail to be able to undertake such a pilgrimage on their own and look forward to the outing.
