The North American Prison Ministry Apostolate, consisting of some 2,500 knights, dames, auxiliary and volunteers is the largest Catholic outreach to the incarcerated in the world. Originally conceived by the Order of Malta’s American Association, today the Prison Ministry Apostolate is composed of the American, Canadian, Federal and Western Associations and has as its mission serving the spiritual needs of our incarcerated brothers and sisters.

This entails visiting prisons- county jails, state and federal prisons (minimum, medium and maximum security) and death row, celebrating Holy Mass, hearing confessions, baptizing and confirming inmates in California, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Connecticut (through the Malta Justice Initiative), one of the first Areas in the United States involved with Prison Ministry.

We let them know that there are those “on the outside” who care about them and are praying for them.

We supply Bibles and prayer books in English and Spanish to our inmates.

We mail approximately 55,000 copies of “The Serving Brother” each quarter to inmates throughout the United States, Canada, and to nearly 37 countries in the Western Hemisphere.

We help the previously incarcerated reestablish themselves in society.

We communicate with the incarcerated through our Pen Pal Program.

We work with the families of the incarcerated, from the West Coast and Missouri, by means of our program “Get on the Bus” by which families –children and spouses—can have an extended visit with their loved ones on Mother’s and Father’ Day.

We mentor children in Camden, New Jersey to keep them in school at least through high school.

Truly our Apostolate is an international Corporal Work of Mercy.
