The 39th International Summer Camp for disabled young people was warmly hosted by Switzerland and Liechtenstein from August 11 to 18. The event brought together 514 participants from around the world, who gathered at the Sport Resort Center in Fiesch, in the Swiss canton of Wallis, to share an extraordinary experience of unity and solidarity.

The camp featured a wide array of activities designed to engage and inspire. Participants enjoyed visits to beautiful nearby locations like Sion, Zermatt, the Aletsch Glacier (one of the biggest in Switzerland) and a visit to the museum of the Swiss Pontifical Guard. Many outdoor sports were practiced such as rock climbing and archery and more extreme sports like rafting and paragliding. Recurring activities such as the Olympic Games and the Christopher’s cup (dedicated to 4 members of the Austrian delegation that sadly died on their return from the Swiss camp in 1994) also took place.

The week also included many spiritual moments, fostering a sense of closeness among the attendees.

“More than 500 of you have journeyed from near and far to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, coming together to be a part of this cherished tradition of the Order of Malta. In the brief time I have been here, I have already been enveloped by the infectious joy and the bright spirits of the young participants and volunteers. Our Swiss friends have labored tirelessly to create an unforgettable week filled with jubilation, companionship, adventure, and spiritual closeness. I express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in organizing the Summer Camp, for providing our Malades friends with countless incredible experiences” said the Grand Master Fra’ John Dunlap reflecting on the event during his visit to the camp early in the week.

Since its inception in 1984, this annual camp has offered a meaningful holiday experience for young people aged 18 to 35 with disabilities, along with their volunteer helpers from 25 different countries in Europe and beyond. Next year the the international summer camp for young disabled will take place in the Netherlands.
