August 2024 – Switzerland and Liechtenstein

My dear friends,

Today, I am overjoyed to be standing among you as we mark the beginning of the 39th International Summer Camp, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of majestic mountains and stunning views.

500 of you have journeyed from near and far to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, coming together to be a part of this cherished tradition of the Order of Malta.

In the brief time I have been here, I have already been enveloped by the infectious joy and the bright spirits of the young participants and volunteers.

Our Swiss friends have labored tirelessly to create an unforgettable week filled with jubilation, companionship, adventure, and spiritual closeness.

I express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in organizing the Summer Camp, for providing our Malades friends with countless incredible experiences.

As we all know, it is through our service to the sick and the needy that our Christian calling truly comes alive.

The spirituality of the Order of Malta is inseparable from our dedication to caring for the less fortunate and the unwell. To love them is to love Christ himself.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?”

The words of Apostle James resonate deeply with our shared mission. They remind us that faith without action is hollow. It is our duty to not only offer words of peace and comfort but to actively address the physical needs of our brothers and sisters.

I am moved by the way you, dear young friends, have embraced this profound experience with this spirit in mind. Engaging in the spirituality of service brings us face-to-face with human suffering.

It is in the “Other” that we find God, and it is there that we should hold dear. Let us not be afraid, for your compassion and love will continue to bring peace and solace to the sick long after this week has passed.

Your presence here today is a testament to your unwavering faith, boundless love, and enduring hope.

I wholeheartedly thank each and every one of you and extend my warmest wishes for a truly magnificent week ahead.
