12/07/2023

More than 4.3 million people across 36 countries worldwide benefited from aid provided by Malteser International in 2022. The Order of Malta’s international relief agency has just published its latest Annual report with fresh data on its main projects rolled out in Europe, Africa, Asia, Middle East and Americas.
The health sector represents the largest area of intervention (40%) with 2.7 million people receiving medical aid, and nearly 700 health institutions supported. Global projects on WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and on Covid related aid, were carried out extensively.

The annual review focuses on the main humanitarian emergencies to which Malteser International responded with its over 1,050 staff worldwide: supporting to the Ukrainian population, strengthening the healthcare system in Syrian, addressing the drought emergency in Kenya and the floods in Pakistan to name a few.

Malteser International coordinated- as does today- the Order of Malta’s efforts in providing aid in Ukraine. Around 4.500 tons of humanitarian goods were distributed to 65 Ukrainian towns and 480.000 meal were distributed to Internally displaced people. Furthermore, many psychosocial support programmes have been implemented to help those affected by the war.

Fighting diseases remains furthermore a core goal of Malteser International, as stated in the Annual Report by the Grand Hospitaller of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Alessandro de Franciscis: “An important focus in our health programmes is on preventing and combating infectious diseases like cholera, ebola and tuberculosis. Since a large proportion of communicable diseases originate in animals and are influenced by ecological circumstances and climate change, we take a holistic view on the link between human and animal health and the environment”.

In his contribution to the Annual Report, the recently elected President of Malteser International, Raphael Vermeir, stressed the binds that tie the worldwide relief agency to the Order of Malta: “Being a work of the Order of Malta brings us unique advantages including access to an unrivalled worldwide network”.

The Annual Report also includes a detailed track record of donations received by state and private donors.
